Read full description of the books:
On completion of her training as an agent of the interstellar federation’s Anthropological Service, Elana is sent to a world whose people may soon destroy their civilization. Since not enough is understood about the situation to justify any interference with their evolution, the Service has no power to act; its agents must go as helpless observers, posing as natives, in the hope of gaining knowledge that may help to save other worlds. This passive role proves intolerable to the young, inexperienced agent assigned to the same city as Elana, a city under totalitarian rule. After falling in love with a local girl who has become Elana's closest friend, he identifies too completely with the natives and unwittingly endangers the entire world by a well-meant but ill-advised attempt to intervene. Forced to assume responsibility for undoing the damage, Elana finds that only she--at great cost--can prevent an immediate war of annihilation.
Although this book has the same heroine as Enchantress from the Stars, it should not be considered a sequel, as it is a completely independent story that is not appropriate for readers as young as many who enjoy the earlier book. Older teens and adults can read the two in either order.
Please note that this book had significant updating when republished. Editions dated earlier than 2003 are in some respects obsolete.

Read information about the authorAlthough she is best known as an author for Young Adults, Sylvia Engdahl's most recent novels, the Hidden Flame duology (Stewards of the Flame and Promise of the Flame) and the Rising Flame duology (Defender of the Flame and Herald of the Flame) are not YA books and are not appropriate for middle-school readers. These two duologies are quite different from each other and some readers prefer the second one; they need not be read in order. They are enjoyed by people who don't ordinarily read science fiction as well as those who do. For more information about them, watch the video trailer and visit her website. She welcomes comments from her readers.
Previously she wrote six novels for teens that are also enjoyed by many adults, all of which were first published in the 1970s by Atheneum and which have been republished in both hardcover and paperback editions by different publishers in the 21st century. All except her Newbery Honor book Enchantress from the Stars were updated; particularly important in terms of relevance to today's readers are the revisions to The Far Side of Evil and Journey Between Worlds. Her trilogy Children of the Star (consisting of This Star Shall Abide, Beyond the Tomorrow Mountains, and The Doors of the Universe) was republished in a single volume as adult science fiction. All her novels except Enchantress are currently available in ebook editions.
She has also written a nonfiction book, The Planet-Girded Suns: The History of Human Thought About Extrasolar Worlds, of which updated and expanded paperback and ebook editions were published in 2012. Most of the nonfiction books listed under her name were edited, rather than written, by her as a freelance editor of anthologies for high schools.
Engdahl says, "I list only a few of the books I read here. Those that appear are just some of the best ones about subjects I deal with in my novels."
